Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
Resource Conservation and the Circular Economy
- “Let’s Scan” Campaign – Phasing out printers in libraries in favor of a free scanning service and mobile scanning stations. This saves paper and energy.
- Cell phone collection boxes in several specialized libraries – In cooperation with INKOTA, old cell phones are collected to support recycling and a fair transition in raw materials.
- Sustainable management of lost and found items – Unclaimed items go to the “FUndgrube.” Additionally, there are initiatives such as clothing swaps, as well as a eyeglass donation box and the donation of found eyeglasses to opticians.
Sustainable Mobility
- Bicycle-friendly infrastructure – Bicycle racks, some with shelters, as well as bicycle repair stations in front of individual libraries, for example at the Library of Economics and the Library of Veterinary Medicine.
- Good connections to public transportation (ÖPNV) – All libraries are easily accessible by bus and train.
Environmental Management and Responsibility
-
Part of the Environmental Management System (EMAS) – The libraries participate in EMAS inspections as part of Freie Universität’s environmental management program and actively contribute to the continuous improvement of environmental standards.
