From 2015-2021 Freie Universität Berlin together with its four strategic partner universities: the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Israel), the Peking University (China), St. Petersburg State University (Russia) and the University of British Columbia (Canada) focused on sustainability as a comprehensive topic for collaborating in research, teaching, and campus management in the framework of the University Alliance for Sustainability,

The Alliance was under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Dr. Klaus Töpfer, former Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, who was previously the Minister of Environmental Protection and the Executive Director of the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) Potsdam. The UAS received funding from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

The partner universities have worked collaboratively to reach the goals of University Alliance for Sustainability since 2015:

  • develop joint research and teaching projects,
  • offer exchange options for faculty, staff, and students,
  • foster inter-institutional learning with regards to management issues.
