At Freie Universität Berlin, Jutta Eming (DHC-Netzwerk 2025-27), Antonia Murath (DJHP 2022), Laura Monique Ginzel, and Carolin Pape (DJHP 2022), examine how medieval tales shape, confirm, and question ideas of motherhood. In addition to exploring the portrayal of motherhood in various medieval cultures and literatures, the researchers also ask what insights this offers for current debates on caregiving, gender, and social inequality. InterMoMa pursues a new approach of „Intersectional Mothering“ that views motherhood neither as a universal nor as an exclusively biological experience, but rather as a historically contingent and socially shaped practice.

The research project is headed by University of Cyprus’s Centre for Medieval Arts and Rituals (CeMAR); collaborating partners are Freie Universität Berlin and Uppsala University, Sweden. The project kicks off on January 1, 2027. During the 3-year periodPlanned are research stays, visits by experts, workshops, webinars, and a summer school at Freie Universität in 2028.
