As Germany's first University Consortium of Excellence, Berlin University Alliance (BUA) is maintaining its outstanding position in the German research landscape as part of the federal and state governments' Excellence Strategy. The Excellence Commission, consisting of the Committee of Experts and the federal and state ministers responsible for science and research, has confirmed for the second time the strategic performance of Berlin as a center of science and innovation with its alliance partners Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin.

Following the first funding application “Crossing Boundaries toward an Integrated Research Environment” Berlin University Alliance is now continuing to develop Berlin as a center of science and innovation in collaboration with numerous stakeholders from research, politics, business, industry, the arts and culture, and civil society. The new funding period is entitled
"Beyond Boundaries: A Joint Agenda for Berlin as an Open Knowledge and Innovation Space".
