Removal from the register of students
Please actively submit your request for deregistration via the self-service portal if you do not intend to continue your studies or have completed your degree. You may submit the request at any time during the semester, either effective immediately or at the end of the semester, provided you are currently registered for the current semester.
Removal of the register of students upon request
Removal from the register of students can be requested in the self-service portal of the Student Administration Office at the end of the semester or on a specific date (before the end of the semester). Keep in mind that upon removal from the register of students, you will lose your student status. This may have consequences, for example, on your health insurance or study financing.
Your certificate of removal from the register of students will be available to you directly after approval of your request in the self-service portal (even in the case of deregistraion at the end of the semester). You will be notified of this via E-Mail.
Only submit a request for removal from the register of students if you no longer wish to be enrolled at the FU. If you wish to enroll in a different degree program at FU in the following semester rather request a change of program.
The removal from the register of students can be requested in the self-service portal for the following cases:
- Completion of studies
- Termination of studies
- Voluntary service
- Other reasons
- Continuation at another university (Please note that if you select this reason, you must upload the admission notice of the other university, which must always be reviewed by the administrative staff. Verification of this document is only relevant in the context of tuition refunds. If you wish to withdraw at the end of the current semester and have not yet paid tuition for the following semester, do not select this reason; instead, select one of the other available reasons. This will ensure that your withdrawal certificate is issued automatically and immediately.)
Removal from the register of students is possible:
- at the end of the semester
- at a desired date (day of request or any future date)
Please ensure that all examination requirements have been completed or, if not, contact your examination office to find out whether it would be advisable to withdraw from the university.
Please note:
The Campuscard becomes invalid upon removal from the register of students. Your Campuscard must be destroyed immediately if you wish to remove yourself from the register of students at a desired date before the end of the semester (e.g., date of request or any future date).
Please also note that you will lose your student status starting the day after removal from the register of students. This may have consequences for your health insurance or student financing.
In both cases, you will receive your certificate of removal from the register of students immediately after approval of your request in the self-service portal. You will be notified of this via E-mail.
Deregistration at the end of the semester is automatically approved immediately after the application is submitted in the self-service portal if no reregistration has been made for the following semester. A request for deregistration submitted for a specific day during the semester or with a reregistration for the following semester that has already been approved cannot be automatically approved. In these cases, the request for deregistration will be reviewed and processed by the responsible administrator. This may take several business days.
The refunding of paid semester fees and dues after removal from the register of students is subject to varying regulations:
The social due to the Studierendenwerk Berlin and the due to the student body will be reimbursed if the removal from the register of students occurs before the commencement of lectures. However, please note that the administrative fee of €50 is non-refundable.
The fee for the semesterticket will be refunded through the Semester Ticket Office. For a possible partial refund it is necessary to submit the request for removal from the register of students one week before the end of the month so that the refund can be processed for the following month. The necessary data for this will be forwarded by the Student Administration Office to the Semester Ticket Office.
Semester fees will be automatically refunded with the process of deregistration. A separate request for refund of semester fees is not required.
Generally, no documentation is required for deregistration.
Exceptions:
- If you have been admitted to another university, please select the reason "Continuation at another university" and upload a copy of the admission letter under the "Attachments" tab.
- Deregistration before the end of the semester: Please destroy your Campuscard on the day of removal from the register, as of this date your student status will no longer exist.
The application can only be submitted by the end of the semester. If you have not reregistered, you will no longer be actively enrolled after the end of the semester and will no longer be able to submit an application for withdrawal. In addition, after the start of the semester, a request for withdrawal will be generated automatically (by the Student Administration Office) due to your failure to reregister. You cannot edit or change this request. If you do not wish to wait for your withdrawal to be processed automatically, please contact the Student Administration Office using the contact form.
Removal from the register of students for official reason
Deregistration for official reasons due to failure to reregister will be announced as part of the reregistration process for the following semester at the end of the current semester. It will be carried out after the start of the following semester, provided you have not met the reregistration requirements by that time. Once you have been officially deregistered, you still have one month to apply to have the withdrawal reversed. To have a deregistration for official reasons due to failure to reregister reversed, you must meet all reregistration requirements (pay the semester tuition, resolve any enrollment restrictions if applicable) and submit the application to reverse the withdrawal via the self-service portal. If you are no longer able to submit the request to revoke your withdrawal via the self-service portal, please contact the Info-Service via the contact form. They will provide you with a PDF form that you can submit to the Student Administration Office.
The Student Administration Office cannot grant extensions for reregistration or for revoking withdrawal.
Automatic deregistration due to completion of studies takes place three times a year (early January, June, and November). Students whose degrees have already been registered by the Examination Office by that time will be officially withdrawn at the end of the semester. If you wish to be officially withdrawn on a different date, or if you plan to enroll in a different degree program at FU in the coming semester, please contact the Student Administration in writing using the contact form.
You cannot reverse a withdrawal resulting from temporary enrollment. Withdrawal due to temporary enrollment—for example, in the Studienkolleg—will not take effect until the end of the relevant semester. If you have successfully applied for another degree program in the following semester, submit an application for enrollment. This will automatically be considered a change of degree program, and you will not be withdrawn.
Withdrawal from the register of students due to a final failed exam cannot be reversed. You can find the withdrawal notice in self-service portal until the end of the semester.
If you do not request the deregistration yourself, instead you are deregistered automatically by official reason, there are several disadvantages:
- Delayed receipt of the notification: Automatic deregistration does not take place until after the start of the new semester. As a result, you will receive the deregistration notification much later than you would receive the deregistration certificate if you had requested deregistration yourself. If you submit a request for withdrawal yourself, you will generally receive a withdrawal certificate within a few days.
- Potential problems when transferring to another institution: When transferring to another institution, the deregistration notice (in the case of automatic withdrawal) may not be accepted as long as the appeal period is still open.
- Reason for withdrawal: The notice of deregistration issued in the case of withdrawal by official reason differs from the certificate of deregistration issued upon request:
- The notice of deregistration states the reason for deregistration (e.g., “failure to reregister”).
- The certificate of deregistration does not state a reason for deregistration.
- Verification of study periods: A Verification of study periods is attached to the certificate of deregistration. This may be required, for example, for statutory pension insurance or for submission to other universities.
- No subsequent exchange possible: A notice of deregistration that has already been issued cannot be exchanged later.
If a request for deregistraion has already been created in the self-service portal and is still marked as “pending review,” students cannot create a new withdrawal request in self-service or make any changes themselves. If you need to make a change or request a certificate before the withdrawal is automatically approved, please contact the Student Administration Office using the contact form.
Starting your studies
Before you have received confirmation of your successful enrollment, you can withdraw your enrollment at any time in the applicant portal.
If you are already enrolled and do not wish to begin your studies at Freie Universität Berlin after all, you can cancel your enrollment and return your study place in the self-service portal by using the 'Return of Study Place' request in the self-service portal until the start of the semester. You may need to activate your student account once. You have received information about this by e-mail. The €50 administration fee will only be refunded if you return your place at the university before the start of the semester due to admission to another university and upload your letter of admission.
After the start of the semester, please use the request form for removal from the register of students in the self-service portal. However, the semester you have started will then count as studied and the semester fees cannot be fully refunded.
Changing degree programs
If you are already enrolled in a Bachelor's program at FU and have applied for a Master's program at FU, you do not need to request removal from the register of students. After being admitted to the Master's program, you can enroll directly in your new program and submit a request for a changing degree programs.
If the semester at the new university starts on October 1st or April 1st, removal from the register of students at the end of the semester (September 30th or March 31st) is sufficient to ensure uninterrupted student status. You will receive the certificate of removal from the register of students beforehand (immediately after the approval of the request).
Please note that interrupting student status by removal before the end of the semester may have implications e.g. for your health insurance or study financing.
- Students who wish to continue their studies at FU in the next semester can reregister and transfer the fees to the reregistration account by the reregistration deadline, regardless of admission.
- If you only want to reregister for the new degree program and would exmatriculate in the event of non-admission, you should wait for admission, as the administrative fee will not be refunded if you exmatriculate after reregistration has already taken place. The late fee will be waived in the event of a change of subject or degree objective.
- If you do not know whether reregistration is necessary because your current studies have not yet been completed, you should contact the departmental office of academic affairs and examinations.
Completing your studies
The right to take exams generally remains after removal from the register of students (BerlHG). Examination regulations for individual subjects can be found in the respective examination regulations. If you still have outstanding examinations, we strongly recommend that you contact your responsible departmental office of academic affairs and examinations before the removal from the register of students.
Yes, you can request the removal from the register of students via the self-service portal either on a specific date or with effect from the end of the semester. Please remember to download all important certificates.
If you wish to terminate one of the degree programs within your parallel studies, please send a brief email (including your student ID number) to studierendenverwaltung@zuv.fu-berlin.de.
