Fee Regulations of the University Library

This page provides a simplified overview of the most important fees at the University Library of Freie Universität Berlin. It is intended for orientation only.

The legally binding version of the regulations is the official German document: Gebührenordnung für die Universitätsbibliothek der Freien Universität Berlin.

If items are returned late, reminder fees apply per item:

  • 1st reminder: €2
  • 2nd reminder: €5
  • 3rd reminder: €10

Reminder fees are charged separately for each step. The third reminder is sent by registered mail.

If items are still not returned after the third reminder, an enforcement notice is issued.

  • Fee: €20 per case
  • Additional administrative and legal follow-up may apply

If borrowed items are lost, damaged, or not returned:

  • €10–€20 processing fee (depending on case)
  • Users may also need to pay replacement or repair costs
  • Fees may still apply even if the item is returned later

Additional charges may apply for:

  • lost locker keys (€10 + replacement costs)
  • lost coat check tokens (€2.50)

  • Replacement fee: €5

  • €1.50 per request (FU students, German interlibrary loan)
  • External users: fee per request
  • International loans: additional actual shipping costs may apply

Fees depend on the service and are based on actual costs (e.g. per page or per item). Exact rates are displayed in the library.
