Information for Library Users

This page provides a summary of the most important library regulations for users.
The legally binding version is the official German “Benutzungsordnung” published by Freie Universität Berlin.

General Information

The University Library of Freie Universität Berlin supports study, teaching and research. By using the library, users agree to comply with the library regulations and staff instructions.

  • A valid library account is required for borrowing materials and using certain library services.
  • Library cards (including campus cards used as library cards) are personal and must not be shared with others.
  • Users are responsible for keeping their contact information up to date and for checking their library account regularly.

  • Borrowed items must be returned or renewed by the due date.
  • Renewal may not be possible if an item has been requested by another user.
  • Overdue items may result in fees or temporary borrowing restrictions.
  • Some materials may only be used within the library or may not be available for loan.

  • Library materials and equipment must be handled with care.
  • Lost or damaged items must be reported immediately.
  • Users may be required to replace lost items or cover repair or replacement costs.

To maintain a suitable study environment:

  • Please keep noise to a minimum and respect other users.
  • Phone calls should be taken outside designated study areas.
  • Eating, drinking and disruptive behaviour may be restricted in some areas.
  • Users must follow library staff instructions.

Serious or repeated violations of the library regulations may result in temporary or permanent exclusion from library use.

  • Electronic resources may only be used in accordance with copyright law and licence agreements.
  • Systematic downloading or sharing of licensed content with third parties is not permitted.
  • Library workstations, internet access and Wi-Fi services must be used responsibly.

  • The library does not accept liability for personal belongings.
  • Additional local rules may apply regarding lockers, bags or coats.

  • Personal data are processed only as required for library services and in accordance with applicable data protection regulations.
