Library traineeship

Academic training at the University Library

Are you interested in working in an university environment? Academic libraries promote open access to information through quality standards and are constantly working to develop and improve services that support academic research.

With our two-year library traineeship program, we offer you a comprehensive, practice-oriented training program that provides insights into the diverse tasks of modern library work, complemented by the Master’s program in Library and Information Science at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The traineeship takes place at the University Library, which includes the Central Library, 12 Subject Libraries, and the University Archives.

Training content

Possible areas of focus during the internship may include:

  • Collection development and cataloguing
  • Collection management
  • User services and reference
  • Digital services such as library software and repositories
  • Designing and conducting training sessions on information literacy and academic research
  • Research data management
  • Open Science, Open Access
  • Strategic library development
  • Human resources management and leadership
  • Public relations

The traineeship offers the opportunity to set your own priorities and apply prior experience in independent projects.

After completing the traineeship, academic librarians assume management and leadership roles in all areas of library work.

Requirements

  • Completed graduate degree (Master’s or equivalent)
  • Fulfilling the requirements under civil service law
