Vocational training positions in the Library Department are expected to be advertised in fall 2026 for vocational training starting in September 2027.

Library Department

The vocational training takes place at the University Library, which includes the Central Library, 12 Subject Libraries, and the University Archives.

What will I learn during the training program?

As a trainee, you will gain experience in various fields of library work. A focus on customer service and communication with colleagues and patrons is of central importance. You will acquire and catalogue different kinds of media, learn research techniques, and advise library users. You will also gain insights into training programs and assist with public relations work. Libraries are constantly adapting their work to technological developments, such as in the field of artificial intelligence. Digitization and sustainability are cross-cutting issues that run throughout the entire training program.

How does the training program proceed?

  • 1st year of training: Getting to know the training library and its responsibilities.
  • 2nd year of training: Expand your knowledge through internships at other institutions and in other fields.

  • 3rd year of training: Deepen your understanding of core tasks and have the opportunity to set individual priorities through selected sections. There is also the option of an internship abroad.

Archival Studies

The University Archives preserve the historical records of Freie Universität Berlin and make them available to researchers, students, the administration, and the public.

What will I learn during the training program?

You will gain insight into all areas of work in an archive and participate in activities organized by the Library Department’s trainee team.

You will learn how archival records are acquired, catalogued in the archive database, and technically processed. Additionally, you will gain practical experience in the storage areas and the reading room, advise users, and conduct research in the archive holdings. You will learn the professional digitization of archival materials and participate in public relations activities.

How does the training program proceed?

  • 2nd year of training: Expanding your knowledge through internships at other institutions and in other disciplines
  • 3rd year of training: Deepening your understanding of core tasks and the opportunity to set individual priorities. Additionally, there is the option of an internship abroad. 

Duration of training and further information

You will also attend the Louise Schroeder Upper Secondary School in Lichterfelde-Süd. Block teaching takes place four times a year over a period of each three to four weeks.

Program duration: 3 years, with the option to shorten it to 2 ½ years
