About the project

Freie Universität Berlin participates in the the consortium 4Memory of the German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). As one of 27 consortia, 4Memory represents the historical sciences within the NFDI. The NFDI aims to systematically index and make available research data that is stored in a decentralized, project-based, and temporary manner for the academic community. In accordance with the FAIR principles, research data should be made sustainably findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable.

The consortium, led by the Institute of European History in Mainz, includes eleven institutions from across Germany in the fields of academia, research infrastructure, museums, and archives. They are supported by more than 70 institutions representing the full spectrum of historical research. Project participants from Freie Universität Berlin—including FUB-IT (Digital Research Infrastructures Division), the University Library (Digital Interview Collections & Digital Research Management), the Latin American Institute (Prof. Stefan Rinke), and History Didactics (Prof. Martin Lücke)—are involved in 4Memory’s work areas of data quality, data connectivity, data services, data literacy, and data culture, develop training materials, serve as data providers, and actively help shape initiatives.

By participating in 4Memory, Freie Universität can help to actively shape the future of digital research, teaching and information infrastructures for the historical sciences.

Other NFDI-affiliated projects focus on automatic speech recognition  (ASR4Memory) and TEI export and interfaces for linguistics (Text+ohd).
