Dr. Behice Pehlivan is Head of the Office of Sustainability at Koç University, where she leads the university's sustainability strategy across research, education, campus operations, and external engagement. Drawing on an interdisciplinary background in industrial engineering, urban sociology, visual communication design, and higher education management, she focuses on developing institutional frameworks that strengthen sustainability through systems thinking, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and science-based innovation. At Koç University, Dr. Pehlivan has developed and leads a number of strategic initiatives that connect diverse disciplines around shared sustainability challenges, bringing together researchers from fields including biodiversity, energy systems, engineering, medicine, and the social sciences. She has established new institutional mechanisms that support interdisciplinary climate research, incentivize collaboration across faculties, and promote the university campus as a living laboratory for sustainability innovation and implementation. She also initiated, coordinated, and leads Koç University's Science Communication Certificate Program, a transdisciplinary capacity-building program that strengthens researchers' science communication skills while fostering greater awareness and capacity for climate and sustainability communication across academia. In 2024, she participated in the MIT Office of Sustainability's Climate Action and Sustainability in Higher Education Program, exploring institutional approaches to strategic climate action and sustainability leadership in higher education. Since 2026, she has served on the Advisory Committee of the International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN). Her current work focuses on integrating sustainability into institutional strategy while creating collaborative platforms that enable research, education, and campus operations to reinforce one another.
