Dr. Detlef von Daniels

Instructor
12249 Berlin
Dr Detlef von Daniels studied philosophy, art history and public law in Frankfurt, Vienna and Freiburg and received his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Göttingen. He held postdoctoral fellowships at the Max Weber Centre for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies in Erfurt and the Mahindra Humanities Center at Harvard University, and coordinated two interdisciplinary research groups in Berlin.
His research lies at the intersection of political philosophy, the history of political thought and legal philosophy. He is particularly interested in genealogy as a way of recovering historical alternatives and bringing them into contemporary philosophical debates. His most recent book is Towards a Genealogy of Cosmopolitan Thought: Before and Beyond Liberalism (Edinburgh University Press, 2026).
Beyond his academic interests, he is an ardent Berliner who can frequently be seen with his two kids at the city's splendid playgrounds and, sporadically, at cultural events or in the Berlin tango scene.
