The FUBiS curriculum this term includes fifteen German language courses for all levels and eighteen courses on different academic topics in English. Freie Universität Berlin awards credits for all successfully completed FUBiS courses according to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), which international students can then have recognized at their home universities. The spectrum of subject courses ranges from politics, economics, and history, to art, architecture, philosophy, and music, to sustainability and societal transformation.
FUBiS also cooperates with the Utrecht Summer School to offer two international summer classes on European history and German art history. For these classes the students have the opportunity to travel to Italy and the Netherlands.
The program integrates the city of Berlin into its curriculum as an “extended classroom” with a diverse series of excursions, where the city serves as the perfect backdrop for experiential learning. Alongside the academic curriculum, FUBiS presents participants with a host of optional leisure activities, including a boot tour on the Spree River, a guided tour of the Reichstag Building, and day trips to Leipzig and Potsdam.
About FUBiS
Since it was first launched in 1998, the Freie Universität Berlin International Summer and Winter University (FUBiS) has been one of the university’s programs with the most international outlook. It is offered three times per year and brought about 600 students from forty nations to Berlin last year alone. The program reinforces Freie Universität Berlin’s status as an international network university by maintaining partnerships with prestigious universities around the world. FUBiS is unique in that it provides tailor-made support to participants, offers a clearly structured program, and aligns its courses with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
