Rethinking international law in the face of global crises – this was the topic of the 20th Annual Conference of the European Society of International Law (ESIL) titled “Reconstructing International Law.”

As the most important European international law symposium, the conference brought together more than 500 international researchers in Berlin and contributed to the international visibility of Freie Universität as a location of excellent international law research. The meetings and talks of the conference and the mix of established and early career researchers will facilitate an array of research publications.

Financial support of the conference and other internal funding in the last years have contributed to the target of internationalization in the field, among others the successful applications of Prof. Oliver Fuo and Dr. Ajla Škrbić for Georg Forster research scholarships of the Alexander von Humboldt foundation. The international guests, either as fellows for a longer stay or as participants of international symposia, bring new perspectives to research, workshops, and teaching, provide feedback for doctoral students and postdocs and thus contribute to a sustainable international research environment.

Additionally, flexible funds were used for the joint workshop with the Alexander von Humboldt research award winner David Dyzenhaus (University of Toronto). Having a variety of international contact points creates a lively network that strengthens existing cooperations, new third-party funding applications and the global reception of Freie Universität Berlin.
