Flexible Funds and Conference Support
The Division for International Affairs promotes the internationalization of research, teaching, and administration at Freie Universität Berlin through project funding and conference support.
In addition, we offer a number of international funding opportunities jointly with partner institutions, the University Alliance Una Europa, and the Berlin University Alliance.
You can find current calls for proposals on our news page and subscribe to our Newsletter International.
Funding applications for projects in 2027 will be accepted starting July 1, 2026. Projects funded by the International Affairs Department must be implemented and accounted for by December 31, 2026.
> Application Form Flexible Funds
Funding Objectives
- Establishing new contacts (bilateral, multilateral, and within networks)
- Seed funding for international projects in research and/or teaching (e.g., COIL formats)
- Improvement of services and support of internationalization in administration units and processes
- Conference support of up to 5,000 € as additional grant for conferences at Freie Universität Berlin that are primarily (at least 60%) funded by third-party funds (e.g., DFG grants)
Further ideas for internationalization? Feel free to contact us with your project plans even if they are beyond the usual - the Flexible Funds are what it says on the tin.
Unfortunately, the Flexible Funds also have their limitations.Travel for doctoral candidates can only be funded if they are clearly linked with work for a larger scale project of the Department. Further specific information on funding for doctoral candidates can be found on the website of the Dahlem Research School.
Funding can not include:
- Conference visits without specific relation to a project
- Translations of (academic) publications
- Conference subsidies for doctoral candidates
- Honoraria for researchers .
