What additional funding is available for grantees that travel with child(ren)?

Erasmus+ supports the participation of university staff with family responsibilities in international mobility. If minor children accompany the participant during an Erasmus+ mobility, additional funding may be requested to cover extra costs related to the stay abroad.

This funding is provided through a real-cost application, in which the actual additional expenses are calculated individually.

Eligible costs

Additional costs resulting from travelling with children may be funded, for example:

  • travel costs for the child or children

  • additional accommodation costs

  • childcare costs in the host country

Only additional costs related to the stay abroad can be funded. Costs that would have arisen even without travelling with a child must be deducted accordingly.

Eligibility criteria

Additional funding may be granted if

  • minor children accompany the participant for the entire duration of the Erasmus+ mobility,

  • the children are biological, adopted, or foster children, and

  • additional costs arise as a result of bringing the child or children.

The application must also explain why childcare at the place of residence is not possible during the mobility period.

Application procedure

The application is prepared in cooperation with the International Office. The Freie Universität Berlin acts as the applicant institution, and the application is submitted by the Erasmus coordination office to the National Agency DAAD.

Please note:

  • The complete application must be submitted at least two months before the start of the mobility.

  • All costs must be explained in detail and supported by appropriate documentation.

  • The application must include a justification explaining the necessity of bringing the child or children.

Please contact us as early as possible if you are planning to apply for additional funding.

Final report and financial statement

After completion of the mobility

  • the actual costs must be reported, and

  • a participant report must be submitted.

Both must be submitted no later than two months after the end of the mobility period. Supporting documents will be kept on file at Freie Universität Berlin and may be requested for audit purposes.
