Freie Universität Berlin - China Scholarship Council Program for Doctoral Researchers (FUB-CSC Programm)

We are pleased to welcome the new CSC scholars from China to Berlin every September!

A particularly successful example of our efforts to attract qualified early‑career researchers is the collaboration with the China Scholarship Council (CSC). Under a special Chinese government program, the CSC has awarded more than 6,000 international scholarships for doctoral studies annually since 2007. In 2017 the number was increased to 9,500 PhD scholarships (6,500 for full doctoral programs and 3,000 for 1–2 year research stays by Chinese doctoral candidates).

Since 2008, Freie Universität Berlin has maintained a privileged partnership with the CSC, which enables us to recruit qualified doctoral candidates for PhD study at Freie Universität with a government scholarship from China.

Faculty across all disciplines offer PhD positions, and Freie Universität’s International Office manages the application process and publicity in China as well as placement and selection. This year marks another intake for the doctoral program with the CSC.

The number of CSC scholars at Freie Universität Berlin has risen steadily since 2009. To date, more than 500 doctoral candidates from China have studied at Freie Universität Berlin with such a scholarship. Since 2013 the CSC has also funded doctoral candidates who already hold a master’s degree from Freie Universität Berlin or from institutions abroad.

The offered PhD positions as well as additional information will be published on this website as well as on the site of the FUB-CSC Program in the beginning of November. For any further questions, please contact Dr. Benjamin Langer, Coordinator for the CSC Program at Freie Universität Berlin (csc@international.fu-berlin.de).
The application deadline is going to last from the beginning of November 2026 till mid-January 2027.

For a PhD position in any of the following departments, please also complete the "Research Project Notification" and submit it together with the PhD position application:

  • Department of Biology, Chemistry, Pharmacy 
  • Department of Geosciences 
  • Department of Education and Psychology (area: Specialized Sleep Research) 
  • Department of Philosophy and Humanities (area: Language Encryption)
