Empowerment-Workshop for first-generation and international students | “Academic Culture in Germany” (in English)
Angebot der Stabsstelle Diversity und Antidiskriminierung
Facilitator’s announcement:
For international and first-generation students, understanding academic culture in Germany means learning its unique rhythm and "unwritten rules": from how professors and students interact to what is expected inside and outside the classroom.
This interactive session supports first-generation and international students in navigating the German academic environment. It is led by two peer mentors who are experienced students themselves. They will share useful information and their own experiences, answer participants' questions and create space to exchange stories, cultural surprises and practical tips for finding your way through university life.
Topics include:
- How do I communicate with lecturers, e.g. writing emails, using office hours, and knowing when to use "Sie" or "du"?
- How do seminars, lectures, exams and the grading system work?
- How do I organize my studies (modules, credits, deadlines, online platforms)?
- Where can I find support at the university when I need it, e.g. study advising, psychological counseling or writing support?
- How can I finance my studies, e.g. through scholarships, BAföG or student jobs?
- How can I build an academic network and connect with other students?
- How can I find jobs in academia?
This workshop will be held online. Participants joining from campus can use a reserved room on site. The link and room number will be sent by email after registration.
