Welche Zusatzförderung für Geförderte mit Behinderung oder chronischer Erkrankung gibt es?

Erasmus+ supports the equal participation of all university staff in international mobility programmes. If additional costs arise during an Erasmus+ mobility due to a disability or chronic illness, additional financial support may be requested to cover extra costs related to the stay abroad.

This funding is provided through a real-cost application, in which the actual additional expenses are calculated individually.

Eligible costs

Funding may be granted for additional costs related to the stay abroad that arise due to a disability or chronic illness and are not covered by other sources.

Examples of possible costs include:

  • additional travel costs

  • higher accommodation costs (e.g. accessible accommodation)

  • assistance services

  • travel and accommodation costs for assistants or accompanying persons

  • medical aids and equipment

  • other necessary additional costs related to the disability or chronic illness

Costs that would have arisen even without the disability must be deducted accordingly in the application.

Eligibility criteria

A real-cost application may be submitted if

  • the participant has a disability or chronic illness, and

  • additional costs arise during the Erasmus+ mobility as a result.

The disability or chronic illness must be documented through appropriate supporting evidence, such as:

  • disability identification card

  • medical certificate

  • official certificate issued by a competent authority.

For certain types of costs (e.g. assistance services or medical aids), additional documentation may be required. In some cases, it must also be demonstrated that other funding bodies (e.g. health insurance providers or social welfare institutions) do not cover the costs.

Application procedure

The application is prepared in cooperation with the International Office of Freie Universität Berlin. The Freie Universität Berlin acts as the applicant institution, and the application is submitted by the Erasmus coordination office to the National Agency DAAD.

Please note:

  • The complete application must be submitted at least two months before the start of the mobility.

  • All requested costs must be explained in detail and supported by appropriate documentation (e.g. offers, screenshots, or price estimates).

  • During the application process, additional clarification between the National Agency, the university, and the participant may be required.

Please contact the International Office as early as possible if you are planning to apply for additional funding.

Final report and financial statement

After completion of the mobility

  • the actual costs must be reported, and

  • a participant report must be submitted.

The relevant documents must be submitted no later than two months after the end of the mobility period. Supporting documents will be kept on file at Freie Universität Berlin and may be requested for audit purposes.
