The student cafeteria building was Freie Universität Berlin’s first new building after the university was founded. It was designed by the architects Hermann Fehling and Peter Pfankuch. Construction on the building, which is located at Van’t-Hoff-Straße 6, was completed between 1951 and March 1953. In early 2010 Germany’s first completely vegetarian student cafeteria – “Veggie-Mensa No. 1” – opened on the ground floor. Following extensive renovations, the cafeteria reopened in December 2022 with a new name – “Shokudō,” Japanese for cafeteria – and a new menu featuring Japanese-inspired fusion dishes. Student cafeterias across Berlin are operated by Studierendenwerk Berlin.
